“Geloof” in de Bijbel betekent iets anders dan in ons taalgebruik

In onze moderne samenleving is het woord “geloof” vaak gehuld in de connotatie van twijfel, onzekerheid en een gebrek aan zekerheid.

Echter, wanneer we dit woord onder de loep nemen zoals het wordt gepresenteerd in de Bijbel, ontdekken we een diepgaand verschil in betekenis en toepassing.

Bijbels geloof, zoals beschreven in de Schrift, gaat verder dan simpelweg “niet zeker weten”. Het omvat een diepgaand vertrouwen, een overtuiging die ons hart, onze geest en onze daden doordringt.

Uit het Grieks wordt het woord “pistis” in de Bijbel vaak vertaald als “geloof” , wat niet alleen verwijst naar een innerlijke overtuiging, maar ook naar een daad van vertrouwen en toewijding.

Een van de meest bekende verzen die het concept van Bijbels geloof illustreert, is Hebreeën 11:1: “Het geloof nu is een vaste grond van de dingen die men hoopt, en een bewijs van de zaken die men niet ziet.” Hier wordt geloof gepresenteerd als een vaste grond, een solide basis waarop we kunnen staan, zelfs als we de volledige realisatie van onze hoop nog niet hebben gezien. Het is een overtuiging die diep geworteld is in de waarheid van God en Zijn beloften.

Een ander aspect van Bijbels geloof is dat het gepaard gaat met actie. Jakobus 2:17 verklaart: “Alzo is ook het geloof, indien het de werken niet heeft, dood zijnde in zichzelven.” Dit benadrukt dat geloof niet slechts een passieve overtuiging is, maar dat het zich manifesteert in daden van gehoorzaamheid en liefde.

In hedendaags Nederlands wordt geloof vaak geassocieerd met twijfel en onzekerheid. Mensen kunnen zeggen “Ik geloof dat het gaat regenen”, wat eigenlijk betekent dat ze er niet helemaal zeker van zijn. Maar Bijbels geloof gaat veel verder dan deze oppervlakkige interpretatie. Het is een diep verankerde overtuiging in de waarheid van Gods woord, die ons inspireert om te leven in overeenstemming met Zijn wil.

Dus, terwijl de moderne betekenis van het woord “geloof” kan worden gekenmerkt door twijfel en onzekerheid, is Bijbels geloof een krachtige en dynamische kracht die ons leven transformeert. Het is een diepgaand vertrouwen in Gods beloften, dat ons leidt tot gehoorzaamheid, hoop en vreugde. Mogen we blijven groeien in dit kostbare geschenk van geloof, geleid door de waarheid van Gods woord en Zijn liefdevolle leiding in ons leven.

For the door is on the latch

So I am watching quietly

Whenever the sun shines brightly

I rise and say,

Surely it is the shining of His face,

And look unto the gate of His high place

Beyond the sea,

For I know He is coming shortly

To summon me;

And when a shadow falls across the window

Of my room,

Where I am working my appointed task,

I lift my head to watch the door and ask

If He is come!

And the Spirit answers softly

In my home,

“Only a few more shadows,

And He will come.”
